The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that Azerbaijan’s current account balance (CAB) will post a surplus equivalent to 7.8% of GDP in 2025, APA-Economics reports citing the Fund.

This means that taking other forecasts into account, the IMF expects the country’s current account surplus to amount to $6.1 billion in 2025.

However, the IMF forecasts that the surplus will gradually decline in the coming years, and by 2028–2029, Azerbaijan will face a current account deficit.

The Fund estimates that in 2026, the CAB surplus will fall to 4.9%, and in 2027, it will further decrease to 1.3%. The IMF forecasts a deficit of 1.7% in 2028 and 2.5% in 2029.

Note that Azerbaijan’s current account surplus stood at $4.7 billion in 2024. The Central Bank of Azerbaijan has projected a surplus of $5.5 billion for 2025.
