The Netherlands have given a positive response to the request for political asylum of a group of Turkish soldiers serving in European countries.
The soldiers have been given a permit to stay in the Netherlands for 18 months. Over this period, the Netherlands will investigate whether the soldiers are guilty of something or not. If proven not guilty, the soldiers will be authorized to live in the country together with their families.
Ankara, however, has demanded the soldiers return to Turkey, but they have refused to return for fear of arrest. Dutch state television has said that more than a hundred Turkish soldiers seek political asylum abroad after the 15 July coup attempt in Turkey that failed to overthrow the government.
German media has said that at least 40 of NATO’s Turkish soldiers seek political asylum in Germany.
