Ukraine has signed an agreement with Sweden to procure 16 Saab Gripen E multirole fighter jets in a deal worth approximately US$2.5 billion, marking Kyiv’s first purchase of newly built Western combat aircraft, Basedment reports.
The agreement forms the first phase of Ukraine’s longer-term ambition to acquire up to 150 Gripen fighters, with deliveries of the initial aircraft expected between 2029 and 2030.
Sweden has also committed to donating 16 older Gripen C/D aircraft, strengthening Ukraine’s long-term efforts to modernise its air force as the war with Russia continues.
