An investigation has been launched against Ekrem İmamoğlu on charges of espionage, APA reports, citing Turkish media.

In a statement by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, it is noted that the investigation conducted by the Bureau for the Investigation of Terror Crimes is based on the digital materials of Hüseyin Gün, who was arrested on July 4 on charges of espionage.

The statement mentions that Hüseyin Gün, who is said to have “maintained contact with many foreign intelligence officials,” held conversations “showing that he gave instructions” to Necati Özkan, İmamoğlu’s adviser.

In the statement of the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, it is reported that journalist Merdan Yanardağ had “numerous contacts and correspondences with Hüseyin Gün related to espionage activities.” It is also alleged that Yanardağ “organized the press department for the election process, received assistance from Hüseyin Gün, and collaborated with foreign intelligence agencies to manipulate the 2019 local elections, thereby committing the crime of espionage.”

In another investigation related to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, it is alleged that “the personal data of 4.7 million people was transferred to foreign countries” through the “Istanbul Senin” application, and that “the ballot box data of 11 million people was processed and transferred outside the program” through the “İBB HANEM” application.

As part of the investigation, arrest warrants have been issued for 13 people.
