“The Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant must be shut down,” Islam Mustafayev, Chairman of the Ruzgar Public Union, said at a briefing of the Environmental Protection First NGO Coalition on “Environmental Impact of Mining Activities Carried Out in the Territory of Armenia,” APA reports.

He said that the second power unit of the Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant, which has been in operation since 1980, remains a potential environmental risk due to aging equipment and the repeated extension of its operating life: “After the expiration of its initial design operating life, the unit’s operation was first extended until 2026, and later a program was launched to extend its operating life until 2036 through the modernization of equipment. In the event of a serious accident or damage to protective systems, there is a risk of radioactive substances being released into the environment, including the contamination of surface and groundwater, with these impacts potentially becoming transboundary in nature. Therefore, the nuclear power plant must unequivocally be shut down. We are talking about a nuclear reactor. This is very dangerous and carries a major risk. We want decisions on its closure to be supported by the parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity at COP17.”
