Mining activities continue along the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, Amin Mammadov, Chairman of the “Water Use Specialists” Public Union, said at a briefing of the Environmental Protection First NGO Coalition on “Environmental Impact of Mining Activities Carried Out in the Territory of Armenia,” APA reports.

He said that one of the issues causing serious environmental concern is the exploitation of the Amulsar gold mine located near the Armenian city of Jermuk: “Under the obligations of the Convention on the assessment of transboundary impacts, Armenia must provide both the public and governments of neighboring countries affected by these activities with a report on their environmental impact. However, the Armenian side has not submitted any report in this regard. Waste from this industry enters transboundary rivers through groundwater and damages the environment of other countries. Even in Armenia, local residents and several non-governmental organizations held a protest over the issue, blocking the road and demanding a report from the government. However, afterward, those organizations were accused in Armenia of spying in favor of Azerbaijan.”

He said that, unfortunately, such cases continue to this day and the Armenian government has still not submitted any report regarding these activities: “We constantly keep this issue on the agenda in every statement and briefing of the coalition. In accordance with the requirements of the Espoo Convention, the Armenian government must submit environmental impact assessment reports on mining activities.”
