Reports regarding plague in Russia’s Irkutsk region are being monitored by the Center for Control of Particularly Dangerous Infections of the Ministry of Health. There is currently no need to introduce additional restrictive measures related to plague in Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Health told APA in response to an inquiry.
“At the same time, the epidemiological situation is constantly being assessed, and if necessary, relevant measures can be promptly strengthened. No cases of plague infection have been recorded in our country over the past 50 years. The epidemiological situation in Azerbaijan is stable and under the control of the relevant authorities. Sanitary and epidemiological control measures regarding persons arriving in our country from Russia are carried out in accordance with the requirements currently in force. If a suspected case is detected, laboratory testing of samples taken from the patient can be carried out at the laboratory of the Ministry of Health’s Center for Control of Particularly Dangerous Infections. The Center is equipped with the necessary equipment and supplies to conduct examinations in this area. The activities of the Center for Control of Particularly Dangerous Infections include epidemiological surveillance of plague and other particularly dangerous infections,” the Ministry noted.
It was also stated that plague is primarily a natural-focal infection caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. In nature, the disease mainly circulates among rodents and fleas: “Human infection occurs mainly through contact with infected animals or fleas, as well as, in some cases, through the respiratory route when the disease is in its pneumonic form. Plague is a treatable disease, and early diagnosis and timely medical intervention are of great importance. However, based on the information currently available, there is no situation that gives grounds for particular concern for the population of Azerbaijan. Citizens are advised to rely only on official information.”
