The United States is closely monitoring the situation regarding a suspected case of plague in Russia’s Irkutsk region, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in response to a journalist’s question about the possible plague case in Russia, APA reports.
“We are monitoring this very closely. I don’t think this is a cause for alarm, but it is something that needs to be watched, and we are doing that,” Rubio said.
Concerns have arisen in Russia over a possible case of pneumonic plague following the death of a 28-year-old employee of the Anti-Plague Research Institute in Irkutsk. Russian officials said the woman died of “pneumonia of unknown etiology” and have not confirmed a plague diagnosis. Around 200 people have reportedly been placed under medical observation.
The US Department of State has also said it is closely monitoring reports related to the incident together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
