“The Taliban-led government of Afghanistan has taken control of the country’s territory and, it must be acknowledged, is governing it quite successfully,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a Moscow-format meeting on Afghanistan, APA’s Russian bureau reports.
According to him, Afghanistan’s economy has grown despite tough sanctions.
Lavrov said Russia would continue providing humanitarian assistance to Kabul, with the next batch expected to arrive in Afghanistan within the next one or two months.
Lavrov recalled that US troops withdrew from Afghanistan five years ago: “The powerful military machine of the United States and its NATO allies was broken by the fighting spirit and resilience of the Afghans. The occupiers were forced to flee.”
The Russian foreign minister also stressed that the deployment of NATO infrastructure in Afghanistan and neighboring countries is unacceptable to Moscow.
