Spain intends to withdraw from the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest in protest against Israel’s participation, Spanish public broadcaster RTVE said, APA reports.
RTVE President José Pablo López told the Senate that he would submit a proposal to the broadcaster’s board calling for Spain to stay out of the contest, which is scheduled to be held in Burgas, Bulgaria.
López said no one could witness the suffering of the Palestinian people without condemning the humanitarian tragedy.
He noted that Spain, together with several other countries, had pushed for reforms within the European Broadcasting Union, stricter governance rules, sanctions for using the contest for political purposes and safeguards to ensure its neutrality.
If the board approves the proposal, Spain will not send a representative to the 2027 contest in protest against Israel’s participation and the conflict in Gaza.
Spain, the Netherlands, Iceland, Ireland and Slovenia also boycotted the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest over Israel’s participation.
The 2027 Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to take place in Burgas on May 15.
