On Wednesday, the government approved a draft law on the denunciation of the Convention on the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), concluded in Minsk on May 26, 1995, APA reports citing Press Release of the Government of Republic of Moldova.
The explanatory note says that "the main activities of the IPA CIS include protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms, monitoring of the development of democracy and electoral law as well as the fight against threats and challenges to security," but "it is obvious that in the current regional context caused by the war in Ukraine, these tasks cannot be performed due to the contrary opinion of some members of the Assembly on this part."
"After analyzing the political impact at the domestic, bilateral regional and multilateral level of denunciation of the relevant Convention, no negative consequences are identified. Nor have any implications been identified for relations with other parties to the treaty and with third parties. The platform under consideration did not contribute to the solution of real problems (e.g., the Transnistrian conflict) in Moldova. Accordingly, since Moldova currently maintains inter-parliamentary relations with CIS member states at the bilateral level, including through friendship groups, it is underscored that it is inexpedient to retain Moldova's membership of the IPA CIS," the text reads.
In addition, the cabinet of ministers approved a draft law on the termination of the Agreement on Cooperation in Preventing and Fighting the Consequences of Emergencies within the CIS.
