British newlyweds and a Greek pilot were killed in a Belavia private helicopter crash on the Greek island of Sifnos in the Aegean Sea, APA reports citing newspaper Proto Thema.
According to newspaper, the passengers were two British tourists, and the pilot was a retired Greek Air Force officer. The newlyweds were traveling to Sifnos on their honeymoon.
The helicopter took off from Markopoulo in the Attica region and crashed while landing near the helipad on Sifnos in the Tholos area. A fire broke out immediately after the crash. According to Sifnos Deputy Mayor Manolis Foutoulakis, the three people on board were killed instantly, and virtually nothing was left of the helicopter. The tragedy occurred when the helicopter was less than 50 meters from the helipad. Based on testimony and available data, the most likely cause of the crash is the loss of the tail rotor.
