India eases visa regulations for 43 countries to boost tourism

New Delhi launched the new regulations on Thursday, under which tourists from countries such as the United States, Australia, Germany and Japan will be able to apply online and receive the green light within four days before getting their visa on arrival.

Tourists from countries such as Brazil, Russia, Finland, Norway, South Korea and Thailand will be also able to get the visas after applying online.

The move comes as foreigners currently have to wait several weeks to learn whether they are eligible for a visa on arrival after submitting their application to visa processing centers.

"This scheme...is a dream come true for the entire tourism industry of India and is bound to positively impact the economy," India’s Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma said in a statement.

He also noted that the implementation of the scheme “will send out a clear message that India is serious about making travel to the country easy."

According to government sources, the new visa procedures will be available at nine international airports in India and will be valid for 30 days from the date of arrival.

The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed to strengthen India's tourism industry since it took office in May 2014 on a pledge to revive the country's economy and create jobs.
