Baku. Lachin Sultanova–APA. “Azerbaijan repeatedly stated that the elections would be completely transparent, open and democratic and full preparations are going for this”, said Elnur Aslanov, Chief of the Department of Political Analysis and Information Maintenance in his interview with APA expressing opinion on the PACE President’s remarks about the possibility to appoint the rapporteur on political prisoners if the three arrested journalists wouldn’t be released until the elections. Aslanov noted that Azerbaijan repeatedly stated to hold elections on the basis of democratic norms and necessary conditions were created for that. “Regarding the journalists’ case, they were brought in justice and this case was investigated on the basis of Code of Criminal Procedure. They were arrested concretely for the crimes they committed. It doesn’t relate to their journalistic activity. I was in London several days ago and they told me there that three journalists in Azerbaijan were arrested for the drug carrying, hooliganism and terror. I asked them adequate question: “Aren’t the people convicted for these crimes arrested in other countries?” The journalists jailed in Azerbaijan were arrested not for their journalistic activity, but for the crimes they committed”.
