Nephew of Azerbaijani opposition party chairman arrested

Baku. Elnur Mammadli – APA. Nephew of Sardar Jalaloglu, chairman of Azerbaijan Democratic Party (ADP), has been arrested. Sardar Jalaloglu told APA that his nephew Altay Mammadli, who has returned from the military service, was called to Berde Military Prosecutor’s Office yesterday. He was interrogated and then arrested. Sardar Jalaloglu said altay Mammadli is accused of beating his fellow soldier during the military service. He said his nephew was arrested because of other purposes.
“When Altay Mammadli was doing military service, fire broke out in one of the buildings in the military unit. The leadership of the military unit collected money to reconstruct the building, but Altay and his family refused to give money. He underwent torture by the leadership of the military unit, his father appealed to the military prosecutor’s office and other government agencies in connection with it. After that they made another solder write that Altay beat him,” he said.

Sardar Jalaloglu said they will appeal to the related government agencies to achieve fair solution of the problem.

Berde Military Prosecutor’s Office told APA that Altay Mammadli faced charges under article 331.3 (insulting, beating, torturing a serviceman) of the Criminal Code.

Military Prosecutor’s Office did not give additional information.

If convicted, Altay Mammadli will serve from three up to seven years imprisonment.
