Azerbaijan marks independence day

Then, on October 18, the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan adopted a Constitutional Act on the Declaration of Independence which was affirmed by a nationwide referendum in December 1991, when the Soviet Union was officially dissolved.

At a nationwide referendum on 29 December , the people unanimously voted for the indepedence from the Soviet Union.

Azerbaijan regained independence 71 years after the fall of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic which existed during 1918-1920.
in May 1992, the Parliament approved a law "On the national anthem of the Azerbaijan republic" to make "March of Azerbaijan" (Azerbaycan mare) the national anthem. The words were written by the poet Ahmad Javad, and the music was composed by Azeri composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov
Then, tricolor flag and national emblem with a eight-pointed star were approved.
