Draft law on withdrawal of restrictions on prosecutor general election recommended to parliament

The parliament’s legal policy and state-building committee discussed a document on amendment to the law on prosecutor office to withdraw the article “Same person can’t be elected for more than two terms to the posts of Prosecutor General, military prosecutor of the republic of Azerbaijan and prosecutor of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic†from Part 2 of Article 16 of the law on prosecutor office. The draft law will be discussed during the autumn session of the parliament in October.
Incumbent Prosecutor General Zakir Garalov was elected to this post on April 25, 2000. His mandate will expire on April 25, 2010.
Military Prosecutor Khanlar Valiyev was appointed to his post on February 10, 2005.
Prosecutor of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is Shahverdiyev Sabuhi Zahmat.
The amendments to the law on prosecutor’s office also consider the election of district attorneys, improving of social protection of the workers of prosecution and other issues.
