Commemorative event on 17th anniversary of occupation of Azerbaijan’s Lachin region held in Martyrs’ Alley

Representatives of Lachin region executive power, Shusha executive power, Karabakh Liberation Organization, Public Union “Azerbaijani Community of Nagorno Karabakh” held a commemorative event in the Martyrs’ Alley on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of occupation of Azerbaijan’s Lachin region by Armenian Armed Forces, APA reports. The participants visited the graves of the martyrs and laid wreath before the Eternal Torch Complex. Head of Lachin region executive power Ramiz Jabrayilov said Lachin had been occupied because of the inexperience of the then government and personal interests of some politicians. He expressed confidence that the negotiations on the settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict would end successfully.

Lachin region was occupied by Armenian Armed Forces on May 18, 1992. Lachin region is located in the south-western mountainous area of Azerbaijan and borders on Kalbajar in the north, Shusha in the east, Gubadli in the south, Armenia in the west. The area of the region is 1 84 000 sq.km. and population 64,000 by the occupation.

The enemy occupied 1 town, 1 settlement and 120 villages, 264 people were killed, 65 were taken hostage, 103 became disabled. Out of 24374 children aged 1-16, 18 were killed, 225 became disabled. 31 lost both parents and 64,000 were displaced.

133 large and medium-size enterprises, 20 medical establishments, 217 cultural establishments, 40 cultural and historical monuments, tens of educational establishments are under occupation in the region.
