Baku. Viktoria Dementieva – APA. The General Conference of UNESCO confirmed Bulgarian diplomat Irina Bokova as new Director General, APA reports. Irina Bokova has become the first female Director General in the history of UNESCO. The tenure of the previous Director General Koichiro Matsuura will expire in November. Irina Bokova was elected in the fifth round of the voting held in UNESCO Executive Board.

Irina Gueorguieva Bokova was born in Sofia in 1952. She is Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bulgaria to France and Permanent Delegate of Bulgaria to UNESCO. Irina Bokova studied in Moscow State Institute of International Relations and the University of Maryland. Bokova was Deputy Foreign Minister of Bulgaria in 1995-1996 and Foreign Minister in 1996-1997.
