COP-29 is an opportunity to give voice to people affected by climate change, Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) Maimunah Mohd Sharif, said at the opening ceremony of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit at COP29 on November 12, APA reports.
"I can confidently and fully say that each of us will continue to work tirelessly to realize our hopes and strive for a more optimistic future. As the head of the UN-Habitat Programme, I thank you for your leadership in COP29. At the same time, I congratulate you for your continued collaboration and foresight in organizing COP29 on a sustained basis," said Mrs. Maimunah Mohd Sharif.
The head of UN-HABITAT stated that the dangers of climate change are already very real: "In Kuala Lumpur, our city, as well as in many other cities, we are witnessing various disasters, from prolonged heatwaves to the most powerful hurricanes. We can contribute to solving these problems and we need to continuously allocate investment to create urban green spaces and at the same time contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions. We propose nature-based solutions to address extreme climate events, including the creation of urban centers, biodiversity hubs, and the transformation of cities into biodiversity-rich environments."
Expressing gratitude to Azerbaijan for its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals, Maimunah Mohd stressed that it is impossible to create peace without sustainable development.
