Double standards hinder conflict resolution, Azerbaijani MP Soltan Mammadov told APA.

The MP said that the Armenian aggression faced by Azerbaijan and the occupation of our lands for many years clearly exposed the existing problems in the system of international relations.
"The selective application of the norms and principles of international law in resolving conflicts, and in some cases the use of double standards as a basis, make it difficult to restore justice. The remarks made by President Ilham Aliyev at the opening ceremony of the 7th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue contain important messages regarding the causes of wars in the modern world and ways to prevent them. Considering oneself superior to other states, believing that one can remain beyond the requirements of international law, and an atmosphere of impunity for committed acts create conditions for conflicts to deepen. Such an approach weakens confidence in international law, undermines mutual trust between states, and lays the groundwork for conflicts to become protracted. Azerbaijan's experience has shown that conducting negotiations alone is not enough to prevent wars. The requirements of international law must be fulfilled, the implementation of adopted decisions must be ensured, and misconceptions that policies of aggression and occupation will have no consequences must be eliminated. Otherwise, there is a risk that conflicts will be frozen rather than resolved and passed on to future generations."

Implementation of UN resolutions is important for the credibility of the international system
Soltan Mammadov noted that the failure to implement the four resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council in 1993 concerning Armenia's occupation for many years demonstrates the importance of mechanisms for implementing decisions made by international organizations.
"The fact that these documents remained on paper for nearly 30 years raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the international community's efforts to resolve the conflict. President Ilham Aliyev also addressed this issue in his remarks to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The head of state pointed out that although Azerbaijan had restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty, the UN had played no role in the implementation of those resolutions. International organizations should not limit themselves to merely adopting decisions but should establish effective mechanisms to ensure their implementation. At the same time, applying international law to all states according to the same principles is a fundamental condition for preventing double standards. To prevent wars, dialogue, mutual respect, and trust between states must be strengthened, while respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity must be preserved as unchanging principles of international relations. Azerbaijan's experience demonstrates the importance of ensuring justice and implementing international decisions for sustainable peace."
