"As the Baku Initiative Group, we strongly condemn the French Senate's rejection of the constitutional reform envisaging autonomy for Corsica. This decision is another manifestation of the colonial mentality that still prevails in French political circles, the blatant disrespect for the will of the Corsican people, and the deep gap between official Paris's statements on the right of peoples to self-determination and its actual policies," Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group Abbas Abbasov said while commenting on the French Senate's rejection of the constitutional reform on Corsica's autonomy, APA reports.
According to him, the events in the French Senate on October 26, 2026, once again demonstrated that the Macron regime is unwilling to accept the Corsican people's desire to determine their own political future, preserve their national identity, and exercise the right to self-government on their own land.
"It is unacceptable that more than four years of political negotiations, the agreements reached, and the will expressed by Corsica's democratically elected representatives have been disregarded in this way. In particular, the removal from the draft law of provisions envisaging recognition of the Corsicans' unique history, linguistic and cultural identity, as well as their special connection to their native land, demonstrates the extent to which the French political elite is reluctant to recognize the collective identity of the Corsican people.
On the one hand, France attempts to lecture the world on democracy, human rights, and the freedom of peoples, while on the other hand, it views even the most basic political demands of peoples in territories under its subjugation as a threat."
Abbas Abbasov noted that portraying the Corsican people's demand for autonomy as a threat to France's unity appears particularly absurd.
"It is a fundamental right of a people to preserve their language, culture, historical identity, and political powers. The real threat lies in the systematic rejection of these legitimate demands and the sacrifice of the political will of peoples to the interests of the central government.
The Baku Initiative Group calls on the French authorities to respect the legitimate will of the Corsican people, recognize their political, cultural, and linguistic rights, remain committed to the agreements reached, and demonstrate genuine political will on the issue of autonomy. It also urges the international community, human rights organizations, and relevant international institutions not to remain indifferent to the injustice demonstrated by the French state toward the legitimate political demands of the Corsican people."
