A plenary session was held within the framework of COP29 on the theme of Earth Information Day 2024, APA reports.

According to the report, Sir Jim Skea, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), who spoke at the plenary session, said that they are preparing a report on climate change and the report will be presented in 2025.

The Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Celeste Saulo said that they gathered today to discuss the problems facing humanity related to climate change: “"Our goal is to work towards limiting the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees. In this regard, political figures and international organizations bear a great responsibility. For the establishment of a healthy future, it is important to focus on financing climate change research on the first day of COP29.”

Cecilia Kinuthia-Njenga, Director of the Intergovernmental Support and Collective Progress at UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) noted that there are gaps in the fight against climate change: "There is a great need for cooperation with local governments in this area. Efforts in this area must be continued."

Yana Gevorgyan, Director of the Secretariat of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), emphasized that only together can we make a difference and achieve results in the fight against climate change.

 

Thibyan Ibrahim, Assistant Director of the Ministry of Climate. Change, Environment and Energy of the Republic of Maldives and member of the Technology Executive Committee constituted body of the UNFCCC delivered a speech on “The role of innovation, advanced technologies and risk-informed climate action in Earth observation”: "Our island nations are more exposed to the impacts of climate change. In this regard, we can use the opportunities of innovation and technology more for research and observation."

Thibyan Ibrahim spoke about the necessary steps to be taken to tackle climate change. Meanwhile, he emphasized the importance of early warning system technologies for risks, considered investing in multidisciplinary technological solutions, leveraging international initiatives and public-private partnerships, supporting technological projects to encourage the involvement of local stakeholders, building the technical capacity of stakeholders in developing countries, using the global community of scientific experts and innovators important.
