"Future generations will not accept the excuse that combating climate change is difficult," European Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra during a panel discussion at Pre-COP29: Enhance Ambition and Enable Action, APA reports.
He noted that we have no choice: “We don’t have a good or bad option here. We already have targets set for 2035, and we must achieve the net-zero goal by 2050. The work we do must be based on scientific grounds. As the EU, we support climate-related scientific research in other countries as well. Science is the foundation of everything. There are a number of projects, with experts and professionals involved. We must accelerate the processes. We need to understand both the impact of climate change on the planet and what countries should do. We must assess the impact of climate change. Over the past 3 months, we conducted surveys, which showed that bolder steps are needed. We aim to reach 90% of the targets by 2040. With the cooperation of the EU and other countries, we must turn the goals into reality."
