Former Russian lawmaker and Kremlin critic Denis Voronenkov was killed by an agent of the Russian intelligence embedded in the power structures of Ukraine, Anton Gerashchenko, a Ukrainian lawmaker, adviser to the Minister of internal Affairs told local TV channels, APA reports.
Gerashchenko said that the assassin served in the National guard of Ukraine for 13 months.
The former Russian MP who fled to Ukraine last year was shot dead on a busy street in central Kiev on Thursday.
Denis Voronenkov, who had spoken out against Vladimir Putin and Kremlin policies, was shot three times outside the upmarket Premier Palace hotel.
A firefight broke out between Voronenkov’s bodyguard, believed to have been provided by the Ukrainian security services, and the assassin. Both were wounded and taken to hospital, where the assassin died a few hours later.
In a February interview with Radio Free Europe, Voronenkov called Russia's seizure of Crimea from the Ukraine a "mistake" and "illegal," and said the couple left the country because of pressure from Russian security services.
Voronenkov also told Radio Free Europe that he was helping Ukrainian prosecutors prepare their case against Yanukovych, who is accused of treason, in part for allegedly facilitating Russia's annexation of Crimea after he fled Ukraine.
