In the first six months of this year, the oil and gas sector recorded a deficit of $1.4 billion in the primary income balance, while the non-oil and gas sector recorded a surplus of $0.5 billion, APA-Economics reports, citing the Central Bank of Azerbaijan.
As a result, the deficit in the primary income balance decreased by 15.8% to $0.9 billion.
The total turnover of receipts and payments on primary income amounted to $4.7 billion. Of this, 59.7%, or $2.8 billion, consisted of payments from Azerbaijan to non-residents. The main part of this amount consisted of the repatriation of income attributable to foreign investors ($2 billion, including $1.8 billion repatriated by international oil and gas consortia mainly in the form of crude oil and natural gas), interest paid to non-residents on securities portfolios ($114.9 million), interest paid for the use of foreign loans ($242.8 million), and other payments ($467.8 million).
The CBA noted that since the majority of other payments ($306.6 million) entered the country’s economy in the form of reinvestment (reinvestment in the country of interest income earned in Azerbaijan), they were recorded under the foreign direct investment item.
