Sarkozy’s office announced Medvedev’s verbal agreement to the ceasefire overnight Friday.
In his latest direct communication with Sarkozy, Medvedev offered assurances that Russia would strictly abide by all commitments under the six-point peace deal, including the withdrawal of Russian military forces.
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili announced Friday that he had signed a ceasefire agreement.
"I signed the ceasefire deal," Saakashvili said at a news conference with visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
“With the signing of this accord, all Russian troops, and any paramilitary and irregular troops that entered with them, must leave immediately,” US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said at a news conference.
The six-point agreement includes principles such as:
1. No recourse to use violence between the parties.
2. The cessation of hostilities.
3. The granting of access to humanitarian aid.
4. The return of Georgian armed forces to their usual quarters.
5. Russian troops should pull back to their pre-combat positions
6. The modality of security and stability of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
Russian officials didn’t release any information. Russian Foreign Ministry was quoted by Interfax as saying they will wait until they see Saakashvili’s signature under the agreement.
