Baku – APA. One FSB agent and two suspects died on Wednesday after a law enforcement operation erupted in explosion and gunfire in northern Kazan, The Kazan Heraldreported.

The casualties occurred during a maneuver which was part of an operation Russian law enforcement have named “Edelweiss-Tatarstan,” an apparent allusion to German’s Operation Edelweiss in World War II. The multi-organizational operation saw involvement from the Tatarstan branches of the Federal Security Service (FSB), Ministry of Internal Affairs, and Ministry of Emergency Situations.

According to the Tatarstan Ministry of Interior, an unspecified number of wanted “criminals” were blocked into the first floor of building number 25 on ulitsa Khimkov at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The men were being pursued in connection with attacks on 19 July which left Tatarstan’s Chief Mufti Ildus Faizov hospitalized and killed his deputy Valiulla Yakupov, reported the Russian Federation Investigative Committee.

After an explosion, believed to have been caused by a grenade, killed an FSB agent on the scene, law enforcement officials raided the building, killing two of the suspects in the process.

A Tatarstan Ministry of Interior press release indicates that there were other suspects within the building, but does not shed light on their fate. None of the deceased have been identified.
