The EU and China’s top trade officials held talks on Thursday, ahead of a crucial meeting in Beijing on 8-9 October that aims to address China’s ballooning surplus, APA reports.

The video meeting between Maroš Šefčovič, EU trade commissioner, and Wang Wentao, China’s commerce minister, lasted over an hour and “covered well-known issues, notably the management of Chinese exports to the EU, EU access to the Chinese market, and export controls on rare earths,” a European Commission readout of the call said.

“While genuine engagement remains a priority, it is equally important that [the] first concrete outcomes are delivered” when Šefčovič travels to Beijing next month, which would “signal that we are moving from rhetoric to results,” it added.

The readout also noted that a Commission team will travel to Beijing later this month ahead of Šefčovič’s visit. Denis Redonnet, the Commission’s chief trade enforcement officer, has previously led the EU’s technical negotiations with Chinese trade officials.
