Baku–APA. A 60-year-old Uzbekistan native was shot dead by Federal Security Service operatives in the Russian countryside for resisting arrest on extremist charges, APA reports quoting RIA Novosti.

Abdurakhman Turdiyev fired a handgun at officers who were trying to detain him, injuring one in both legs, and was killed by return fire, Vzsar.ru said on late Thursday.

Grenades, explosives and two sawed-off shotguns were found in the house in the remote village of Lugovskoye in Saratov region, which Turdiyev occupied since 2005, the report said.

Officers also uncovered some heroin and extremist literature in the house, the website said.

An extremist group known as the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, allied with al-Qaida and the Taliban, was active in the Central Asian country in the 1990s, but went largely defunct following a crackdown during the Afghan war. Remnants of the group reportedly reemerged later under the title of the Islamic Movement of Turkestan.
