A media tour has been organized in Shamakhi to familiarize journalists with the conservation works carried out at the Pir Omar Sultan shrine, APA reports.
Rafail Taghizade, representative of the Mountainous Shirvan Regional Department of Culture for Shamakhi district, informed media representatives about the works carried out.
He stated that until 2019, the area was known as the Omar shrine:
"However, until that time, there was no information about the existence of a mausoleum here. In 2019, archaeological excavations conducted in the area by the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences uncovered the remains of the mausoleum and the tomb of Omar Sultan. In 2020, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Vice-President of Azerbaijan Mehriban Aliyeva visited the shrine during their trip to Shamakhi and gave instructions to carry out conservation works here. Subsequently, conservation works began at the monument. The walls surrounding the monument, built of river stones and rocks, were restored, and the tomb of Pir Omar Sultan was reconstructed. The graves of the disciples located in the area were also restored, and landscaping works were carried out in the surrounding area. Restoration and conservation works at the Pir Omar Sultan shrine were carried out with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. The monument is believed to date back to the mid-14th century."
It should be recalled that President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva inspected the conservation works carried out at the Pir Omar Sultan shrine in Shamakhi on September 17.
