New Zealand's ruling party confirmed early on Sunday the election of Chris Hipkins as leader of the Labour formation and New Zealand's prime minister, Radio New Zealand said, APA reports citing Teletrader.

Hipkins, 44, was the only contender after his predecessor Jacinda Ardens announced last Monday she would resign next February 7.

Originally elected as a Labor MP in 2008, Hipkins quickly emerged as the leading name in the government's response to the pandemic. He was named health minister in July 2020 before becoming minister for the COVID response at the end of the year.
