Australia’s new round of sanctions targets 20 individual affiliates of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as well as three entities of the IRGC, which are alleged to have enabled or participated in the Iran’s violent response against the civilian population, APA reports, citing THE AUSTRALIAN.
In a statement, Foreign Minister Penny Wong described the move as a response to “Iran’s horrific use of violence against its own people”.
Senator Wong said those sanctioned in Tuesday’s announcement were complicit “in oppressing the Iranian people, violently suppressing domestic protests, and threatening lives both inside and outside Iran”.
“Today’s action underscores our commitment to standing with the people of Iran alongside international partners against the Iranian campaign of oppression and destabilisation,” she said.
“The Albanese government has now sanctioned more than 200 Iranian individuals and entities and more than 100 IRGC-linked individuals and entities.”
The announcement comes after Australia listed the IRGC as a state sponsor of terrorism in November, accusing the group of allegedly targeting Jewish communities in Sydney and Melbourne.
