Baku-APA. At least 2 people were killed and 16 others went missing after a suspension bridge in Serang, Banten province collapsed on Tuesday, an official said, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The accident took place at about 16:00 local time when about 40 people, most of them children, were watching rafting practice during the floods from the bridge, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman of national disaster management agency, said.
"Suddenly the bridge collapsed because it could not bear the weight of too many people on it," Sutopo told Xinhua by phone.
Rescue workers, police and soldiers are searching for those missing in the accident as 22 people have been rescued, said Sutopo.
Banten province has been battered by widespread flooding in recent days.
