Sweden’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday, September 16, that it summoned the Iranian ambassador in Stockholm and ordered an official at the Iranian Embassy to leave the country, Iran Wire reports.

According to Reuters, the Swedish Foreign Ministry cited activities “incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations” as the reason for the decision, though it did not provide further details regarding the exact nature of these activities.

The Vienna Convention establishes the legal framework and privileges governing the operation of foreign diplomatic missions.

Bilateral relations between Stockholm and Tehran have faced persistent strain in recent years. Sweden has repeatedly summoned Iranian diplomats in response to the detention of Swedish nationals in Iran.

In June 2024, Swedish citizens Johan Floderus and Saeed Azizi were released from Iran as part of a prisoner exchange that secured the release of Hamid Nouri from prison in Sweden.

Furthermore, in July 2025, Sweden joined several European nations, the United States, and Canada in accusing the Iranian regime of engaging in plots to threaten, abduct, and harass dissidents, journalists, and other individuals across Europe and North America.
