The United States military has carried out strikes against targets in southern Iran, including boats allegedly attempting to lay naval mines and missile launch sites, describing the actions as defensive operations, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
In a statement released on Monday, CENTCOM said the strikes were aimed at protecting US forces from threats posed by Iranian military units operating in the region.
According to the command, the targeted vessels were suspected of attempting to deploy mines in waters near southern Iran, while additional strikes were conducted against missile launch positions considered a potential risk to US personnel and assets.
CENTCOM spokesperson Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins said the command had exercised restraint throughout the ongoing ceasefire period while continuing to defend its forces against emerging threats.
“US Central Command remains committed to protecting its personnel and maintaining regional security while demonstrating restraint during the current ceasefire,” Hawkins said.
The statement did not provide details on casualties or the extent of damage caused by the strikes.
The latest incident comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with both sides accusing each other of actions that threaten stability in the region. Iranian authorities have not immediately commented on the reported strikes.
CENTCOM said it would continue to monitor developments and take necessary measures to ensure the safety of US forces operating in the Middle East.
