he United States State Department has given its approval for a potential sale of F-35 aircraft and associated equipment to South Korea, in a deal estimated at $5.06 billion, according to a statement posted on Wednesday by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCU), APA reports citing Teletrader.
"The proposed sale will improve the Republic of Korea's capability to meet current and future threats by providing credible defense capability to deter aggression in the region and ensure interoperability with US forces," the document stated.
South Korea's government has expressed its desire to purchase a maximum of 25 F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Conventional Take Off and Landing (CTOL) aircraft, as well as up to 26 Pratt & Whitney F135-PW-100 engines.
