United States Representative from Louisiana Mike Johnson on Wednesday gathered enough votes from his congressional colleagues to become the next speaker of the US House of Representatives, APA reports citing Teletrader.
Republicans, who control the lower chamber of Congress, seemingly decided to fully back Johnson after multiple weeks of intraparty voting and several failed nominations. They voted today unanimously for the Louisiana lawmaker, who beat Democratic Party candidate House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries 220-209.
No one voted "present" and there were no votes for a third candidate.
