Some influential Republican lawmakers in the United States are trying to dissuade President Donald Trump’s administration from hastily concluding a peace agreement with Iran, the newspaper Politico reports.
According to the publication, Republicans fear that an agreement could be reached on terms unfavorable for Washington.
It was noted that one of the main contentious issues is the future of Iran’s nuclear program, including its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium and ensuring free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The newspaper writes that several influential Republicans are calling on the administration to abandon negotiations and the pressure policy toward Iran.
Among them is Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee Roger Wicker, who had previously called for the resumption of bombings against Iran.
Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina said that the administration “has a lot to explain” regarding possible agreements with Iran.
