Death toll from Colombia earthquake rises to 265

The death toll from the magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10 has risen to 265.

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella announced the updated figures, APA reports.

He said 496 people remain missing, while more than 3,770 others have been injured in the disaster.

The powerful earthquake destroyed or seriously damaged numerous residential buildings, hospitals, schools and other infrastructure facilities across the country. More than 9,550 homes have been destroyed, according to Reuters.

Rescue teams are continuing to search for people trapped beneath the rubble. The operations have reportedly reached a critical stage, and the death toll is expected to rise due to the large number of missing people.

The Colombian government has announced plans to establish an emergency reconstruction fund for the earthquake-affected regions.
