Baku-APA. The death toll from Egypt’s recent clashes between protesters and police rose to 41 with more than 3,200 injured, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

The dead included 36 in Cairo, the ministry added.

On the same day, the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) apologized on its official Facebook page for the deaths in the latest round of clashes which erupted over last weekend.

The military council said it "regretted and apologized for the martyrs of the Egyptian people in recent clashes," and "expressed condolences for the families of the martyrs across the country."

Despite the clashes, Mukhtar Al-Moullah, a member of the SCAF, told a news conference Thursday the country would go ahead with its plan to start electing the People’s Assembly (the lower house of parliament) on Monday.

The polls will be held in three stages, with each in nine provinces. Cairo and Alexandria are among the first-stage provinces.

Protesters still roamed Cairo’s Tahrir Square on Thursday, but made a much more smaller presence. No clashes between protesters and police were reported throughout the day.
