Baku-APA. Somali pirates hijacked a Yemeni- flagged ship with 23 Thai sailors and five Yemenis on board, local media News Yemen said Thursday, APA reports quoting Xinhua News Agency.

The hijack took place off Yemen’s southeast port of Balhaf on Tuesday, said News Yemen.

It said one of the 23 Thais and the five Yemenis had managed to escape and reached the coastline of Balhaf unharmed, a key port city in Yemen’s southeast province of Shabwa.

On Wednesday, Yemeni Interior Ministry said Somali pirates hijacked a Yemeni ship off Balhaf on Tuesday, but did not provide further details.

Piracy is flourishing on the world commercial sea-lanes in the Gulf of Aden off southern Yemeni coasts where as many as 25,000 ships pass through every year.
