Ramadan to start on June 7 – Fatwa
# 26 May 2016 11:19 (UTC +04:00)

The fatwa was issued during a meeting chaired by CMO Chairman Haji Allahshukur Pashazade on Thursday.

According to the calculations conducted by the Shamakhi-based Tusi Astrophysical Observatory of the Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences (ANAS), the 1st of Ramadan—that is, when the moon appears—will fall on June 7 in Azerbaijan this year.

With the appearance of the moon, fasting will start. Just as in all Abrahamic religions, in Islam too fasting has been made obligatory by Allah the Almighty.

According to the fatwa, the believers should do more to lend a hand to the needy, orphans, elderly people, etc. in this special month, and should avoid excessive use of food at Iftar times. The most virtuous deeds in Ramadan are complete recitation of the Koran, Dua from parents, commemoration of the deceased, showing respect for the people of knowledge and virtue, and promoting dialogue, friendship, and mutual respect among people.

As usual, the CMO, in collaboration with the ANAS Astrophysical Observatory, has prepared a special calendar for the start of Ramadan, daily prayer times, and the dates of the holiday as well as a booklet on Duas specific of the holy month.

The fatwa calls on regional gazis, authorized representatives, imams and clerics not to use the calendars that can cause sectarian discrimination.

According to the fatwa, Eid al-Fitr – the Ramadan holiday – falls on the 1st of Shawwal – the 6th of July.

In Azerbaijan the religious holidays – Ramadan and Eid al-Adha are celebrated at the state level, which is a manifestation of respect and attention of the Azerbaijani state towards religious values, the fatwa reads.

According to the Gazi Council, it is recommends to pay worth AZN 5-10 per capita as Sadaqat-ul-fitr.

The Gazi Council recommends religious figures to pay tribute to those, who laid down their lives for the homeland, and Karabakh martyrs along with holy people in Islam and to deliver sermons on patriotism.

“In this holy month, we pray for our national leader Heydar Aliyev, who made our independence eternal, and wish President Ilham Aliyev, who has done great work for strengthening of our statehood and welfare of our people, to be gifted with blessings of Allah in this holy month. We pray to Almighty Allah for the prosperous future of Azerbaijan, peace in our country and all over the world. May Allah let us break our fasts in Shusha–-the heart of Karabakh–-during next Ramadan. I congratulate Muslim brothers and sisters on the advent of the holy month of Ramadan. May Allah accept our fasting and prayers! Amen!,” says the fatwa.
