The next court hearing in the criminal case of Sultan Gasimov, Azerbaijan’s former Consul General in St. Petersburg, who is accused of fraud, has been held, APA reports.
At today’s hearing at the Baku Court on Grave Crimes, chaired by Judge Firdovsi Aliyev, personal details were clarified, and the parties were informed of their rights and obligations.
The defendant’s lawyer filed a motion, saying there were some violations in the case, and requested that the case be returned for preliminary investigation.
The victim’s lawyer filed a motion, noting that the apartment at the address provided by the defendant in his personal details had already been sold. It was noted that no payment had been made in connection with the damage caused. For this reason, a change in the preventive measure against him was requested.
The court retired for deliberation.
Upon returning from deliberation, the panel of judges announced that the motions had not been granted and decided to send the case for trial.
The trial hearing has been scheduled for October 13.
It should be noted that the criminal case against the former Consul General was investigated by the Main Anti-Corruption Department under the Prosecutor General. It was established that the victims suffered damage amounting to more than 200,000 manats. Anton Zayats and Faig Mikayilov were recognized as victims. Part of the total damage was compensated during the investigation. Thus, Sultan Gasimov promised a citizen living in Russia that he would purchase land through an auction. In addition, he promised another victim that he would transport gold by air to another country.
He was charged under Articles 12.1 and 178.3.2 of the Criminal Code (fraud committed in the territory of a foreign country causing large-scale damage), the investigation into the criminal case was completed, and the case was sent to court.
Sultan Gasimov was appointed the first Consul General of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Yekaterinburg, Russian Federation, in 2009 and was recalled from the post of Consul General in 2016. On May 3, 2016, he was appointed Consul General of Azerbaijan in St. Petersburg. He was recalled from this position on October 21, 2024.
