Cities in Karabakh are being rebuilt by combining modernity and diversity, Ravan Hasanov, Executive Director of the Baku International Multiculturalism Center, said during the session titled “The Rights of Indigenous Peoples Roundtable: Adequate Housing for All Indigenous Peoples in Their Diversity” at WUF13, APA-Economics reports.

He stated that although rapid urbanization creates opportunities for economic development and innovation, many communities, including indigenous peoples, face difficulties in accessing healthcare, education, housing, and employment opportunities.

According to Ravan Hasanov, although the term “indigenous peoples” is not used in Azerbaijan, the country has for centuries been a place where cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity exists. He noted that more than 30 ethnic groups with different languages, cultures, and beliefs live in Azerbaijan, and multiculturalism is both a way of life and a state policy.

The Executive Director emphasized that Azerbaijan pays special attention to harmonizing modernity, innovation, and diversity while rebuilding cities in the liberated territories of Karabakh.

“For us, a city is not only a bridge, road, or building, but also the social and cultural environment in which people live,” he added.

Ravan Hasanov noted that the preservation of historical monuments, religious places of worship, and the cultural heritage of various communities contributes to strengthening social solidarity and mutual respect in cities.
