Protesters in Syria, sparked by rising gasoline prices, blocked the M5 international highway linking the northern and southern regions of the country, APA reports citing Al-Ikhbariya television.
According to him, the North-South Highway is blocked by burning tires and debris near the city of Maaret al-Nuuman in Idlib province. Earlier, reports emerged of similar actions by protesters on the Deir ez-Zor-Raqqa highway, where a convoy of fuel tankers was stopped.
Local experts expect transportation costs to increase by 20-30%.
Syrian Energy Ministry spokesman Abdel Hamid Sallat told the SANA news agency that "the fuel price adjustment was due to the situation on global energy markets." Furthermore, he noted that reconstruction is currently underway at the oil refinery in the port of Baniyas on the country's Mediterranean coast.
