Giorgi Baramidze, one of the leaders of the opposition United National Movement Party in Georgia, who is accused of treason and sabotage, has been remanded in custody for two months, APA’s local bureau reports.
The decision was made by the Tbilisi City Court based on a motion filed by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia.
The opposition politician called the charges against him absurd and inconceivable.
Note that Giorgi Baramidze was detained at his home yesterday. In July, he said during a television program that during the war in Abkhazia, Georgian servicemen did not take prisoners but shot them on the spot. The Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia stated that with these remarks, the politician had effectively accused the Georgian army of committing serious war crimes and violating international humanitarian law, thereby harming state and national interests.
If Giorgi Baramidze is found guilty, he faces up to four years in prison.
Recall that Giorgi Baramidze was one of the prominent politicians during Mikheil Saakashvili’s presidency. He served as interior minister in 2003-2004 and as defense minister in 2004. He later served as state minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration and as deputy prime minister of Georgia from 2006 to 2012. After the Georgian Dream party came to power, he continued his political activities in opposition and served as a member of the Georgian Parliament from 2012 to 2016.
