Baku. Konul Kamilgizi – APA. “More than 5 000 girls have fallen victims to early marriages in Azerbaijan this year,” UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women Rashida Manjoo who is in Azerbaijan for 10-day mission said at the press conference, APA reports.

She said that the increase in the number of early, forced and unofficial marriages, especially inherent to the southern regions was continuously emphasized as a matter of concern during the mission: “According to the information of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs, more than 5 000 girls fell victims to early marriages in Azerbaijan in 2013. This figure was 4 000 in 2012. Early marriages caused serious damages for each individual in different levels, including physical and spiritual, educational, socio-economic damages, as well as damages in terms of the reproductive health of girls. As it is noted in the concluding observations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (2009), the state should continue improvement measures, continuous awareness campaigns, carry out the relevant activities with communities and religious institutions to ensure prevention of such marriages, as well as proper legal registration of all marriages.
