Baku. Konul Kamilgizi – APA. “Baku has always been considered the city of winds, strong winds are observed here. However, in recent years wind speed decreased and wind direction changed in Baku,” Director of Geography Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Ramiz Mammadov told APA.
Mammadov said that strong north and north-west winds mainly blow in Baku.
“Wind speed decreased in recent years. Strong north and north-west winds were replaced by the north-east winds in recent years. This decrease and change aren’t only observed in Baku. Thus, speed of north-west winds decreased in the North-Caspian area and Middle Caspian area, including Baku. These results come out as a result of surveys carried out in the past 20-30 years,” he said.
The Institute Director mentioned that the reasons for this can not be specified. He said it is caused by the changes in the ecosystem.
“The north and north-west winds were the most intensified winds in Baku. Now these winds have been replaced by the north-east winds. This is a huge change in the ecosystem. This change will cause other changes in the environment. This is a serious signal. Decrease in wind speed is observed in the last 20 or 30 years and this is a rare event and recorded once in a millennium. Such cases can cause reduce in precipitation and increase in number of sunny days. Anyway, these changes will lead to next changes”, he concluded.
