Baku. Farid Mirzayev – APA. Areas prone to landslides are undergoing a large-scale exploration in Baku.

Elbrus Alizadeh, the deputy director of the Institute of Geography of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), told APA that the exploration is being carried out at the expenses of the Science Foundation of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR).

According to Alizadeh, the exploration is aimed at preparing maps by conducting large-scale digital geo-morphological explorations in different areas in Baku.

“We’re also aiming to create a 3D model of each of the landslide areas. For this reason, associates from the Institute of Geography are exploring the areas prone to landslide in Baku. The entire area from the Bayil amphitheatre, the Teletheatre and the Alley of Martyrs to the Badamdar slope have been explored on a large scale,” said Alizadeh.

Deputy head said that landslide zones in "Ukraine" square in Ahmedli, territory of Brick Factory in Gunashli, Zig slope were studied: “Though slope protection works were carried out in these territories, there is still a danger of landslide. There is stability in these areas, as it is summer there is no humidity. The situation is normal at the Alley of Martyrs. The situation is particularly dangerous in the landslide zones in territory of Brick Factory in Gunashli and Zig slope,” he said.

Alizadeh noted that increase of moisture can cause activation of the landslide areas: “The territory can be flooded as a result of increase in the amount of precipitation and breakdown of communication lines, and it shows the possibility of activation of the landslide areas,” he said.

Deputy head added that next research works will be carried out in landslide zones in Masazir settlement.
